Google has permanently reduced the Pixel 9a’s retail price from $499 to $399 in the United States, a $100 cut that repositions the device as the most competitively priced phone in Google’s current lineup. The new price is effective immediately at the Google Store and at major US retailers including Best Buy, Amazon, and carrier partners.
The Pixel 9a launched in May 2026 at $499 and received strong reviews for its camera performance and battery life, but faced criticism for being priced too close to the standard Pixel 9, which retails at $799 but is frequently discounted. The $100 price cut creates clearer separation between the two devices.
Timing: ahead of iPhone 17
The price reduction comes roughly two weeks before Apple’s expected September event, where the company is anticipated to announce the iPhone 17 lineup. Analysts at Counterpoint Research noted that Google’s cut is strategically timed to attract buyers who might otherwise wait for the iPhone 17 announcement before making a purchase decision — particularly in the $400–500 price segment where the Pixel 9a had previously competed against Samsung’s Galaxy A55 and the iPhone 15, now available refurbished in that range.
What you get at $399
The Pixel 9a at $399 includes Google’s Tensor G4 chip, a 6.1-inch OLED display with 120Hz refresh rate, a 48MP main camera with the same computational photography pipeline as the Pixel 9, and a 5,100mAh battery that Google rates at over 31 hours of use. The device ships with Android 15 and is guaranteed software updates through Android 22 — seven years of OS support, matching the Pixel 9 series.
The main compromises compared to the Pixel 9 are the absence of a dedicated ultrawide camera at the same aperture, a plastic back rather than matte glass, and slightly slower wired charging at 18W versus 27W on the Pixel 9.
International pricing
Google has confirmed the $100 reduction applies to the United States only at this stage. UK and European pricing for the Pixel 9a remains at its launch price of £449 and €499 respectively, though local promotions through carrier partners may vary. Google did not confirm whether an equivalent price reduction would follow in other markets.
