Samsung has officially confirmed the Galaxy S26 Ultra, revealing key specifications ahead of a January 2027 launch at Galaxy Unpacked. The announcement, published through Samsung’s global Newsroom on Wednesday, confirms the flagship will use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 processor and include a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto camera as standard across all storage configurations — removing the tiered camera arrangement that differentiated storage variants in the S25 Ultra lineup.
The decision to standardise the 200MP periscope system across all variants represents a notable change in Samsung’s product strategy. Previous flagship generations offered the highest-resolution telephoto camera only on mid and top storage configurations, effectively using camera hardware as a price differentiation mechanism. Samsung has not explained the rationale for the change, but the move is likely to reduce consumer confusion and may reflect falling sensor production costs.
Camera system: 200MP periscope with Sony co-developed sensor
The 200MP periscope telephoto supports 10x optical zoom and includes optical image stabilisation rated for up to eight stops of correction — two stops more than the S25 Ultra. Samsung said the camera uses a new sensor developed jointly with Sony that improves low-light performance at telephoto focal lengths, addressing criticism levelled at the S25 Ultra’s telephoto output in dim conditions.
Samsung’s camera software now includes an AI-powered scene recognition engine that analyses frame composition, lighting conditions, and subject motion in real time, adjusting ISO, shutter speed, and focus behaviour before the shutter is triggered. The company said the system is designed to reduce the number of shots required to capture a usable image in challenging conditions such as fast-moving subjects or mixed artificial lighting.
Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 and software commitments
The Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 is Qualcomm’s forthcoming top-tier mobile processor, expected to be officially announced at Qualcomm’s annual Summit in October 2026. Based on pre-release information shared with device partners, the chip is manufactured on TSMC’s 3-nanometre process and includes a dedicated on-device AI engine capable of processing large language model tasks locally without cloud connectivity. Samsung said the chip enables several Galaxy AI 2.0 features to run entirely on-device, improving response speed and privacy.
Samsung extended its software update commitment to six years of major Android OS upgrades and seven years of security patches, up from five and six years on the S25 series. The company cited increasing consumer demand for longer device lifespans and growing regulatory pressure in Europe around software support obligations as drivers behind the extended commitment.
Galaxy AI 2.0 features and pricing outlook
The S26 Ultra will ship with Samsung’s Galaxy AI 2.0 suite, which includes an updated real-time call translation function that now supports 20 languages including Ukrainian and Thai, and a new AI-powered photo editing tool that can remove objects, replace backgrounds, and adjust lighting after the fact without requiring a separate application. A new “Live Caption” feature generates real-time captions during video playback and calls, stored locally and not uploaded to Samsung’s servers.
Pricing has not been confirmed. The Galaxy S25 Ultra launched at $1,299 for the 256GB configuration, and industry analysts expect the S26 Ultra to hold a similar entry price point, with the 1TB configuration likely priced above $1,499. Samsung is expected to confirm full pricing details at Galaxy Unpacked in January 2027.
