Google has expanded AI Overviews to 40 additional countries, bringing the AI-generated search summary feature to more than 100 markets globally. The expansion, announced Wednesday through Google’s official Search blog, includes major markets across Europe, Southeast Asia, and Latin America that had been awaiting localised versions of the feature since its US debut in May 2025.

AI Overviews appear at the top of Google Search results pages and provide a synthesised response to the user’s query, drawing on content from multiple indexed sources. Unlike featured snippets, which display a single extracted passage, AI Overviews generate a composite answer and present it alongside a set of source links. Google has described the feature as intended to help users get a quick understanding of a topic before deciding which sources to explore further.

Usage scale and accuracy improvements

The feature has been available in the United States since May 2025, where it now appears on an estimated 20 percent of all search queries according to data from third-party analytics firm Similarweb. Google said it has processed over 10 billion AI Overview responses in the US market since launch, and that the expansion incorporates changes made in response to accuracy issues identified during the US rollout.

Early versions of the feature drew criticism in 2025 after users documented cases where AI Overviews surfaced clearly incorrect information — including advice that contradicted established medical guidance. Google said the expanded version uses an updated grounding system that cross-references claims against multiple high-authority sources before including them in a summary, and that human reviewers are used to evaluate outputs in sensitive categories including health, finance, and legal topics.

Language support and regional rollout

The international rollout includes language support for French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, and Korean in addition to English. Google said these languages were prioritised based on search volume and the availability of sufficient high-quality indexed content to support reliable AI-generated responses. Additional language support, including Hindi, Arabic, and Indonesian, is described as “in active development” with no confirmed timeline.

Some markets in the new rollout will receive a more limited version of the feature initially, with fewer query categories triggering AI Overviews. Google said this is intentional, as it allows the company to monitor quality in each market before expanding the feature’s reach to a broader range of query types.

Publisher traffic concerns and advertising integration

The expansion arrives amid ongoing concern from publishers about the feature’s effect on referral traffic. Industry data from the US market shows a 12 to 18 percent decline in organic click-through rates in categories where AI Overviews appear frequently, including health, finance, recipe, and how-to content. Several major media companies have raised the issue directly with Google, and at least two publishers have cited AI Overviews as a contributing factor in recent traffic declines in their investor communications.

Google said it is testing new advertising placements within AI-generated summaries, which it expects to make broadly available to advertisers before the end of 2026. The company said early tests show that ads placed within AI Overviews achieve click-through rates comparable to traditional search ads, which it described as evidence that the format can support a sustainable advertising model even as the presentation of organic results changes.
